No other region embraces culture, craftsmanship, and conviviality as enthusiastically as the green hills of Appenzellerland. Throughout the year, the people of Appenzell celebrate or commemorate both the joyful and sad moments in the history of their forefathers and great-great-grandmothers.
An experience in every season
In spring and early summer, herdsmen and cattle move up to the Alpstein, accompanied by colorful cattle drives and the "Betruuf." "Stobede" and other musical festivals take place in summer. Cattle shows in autumn and "Chlausezüüg" during the Christmas season: traditions and customs are cherished and upheld here throughout the year. For the people here, this is not a show for guests, but an expression of their attachment to their homeland. Appenzell and its customs form a combination that never fails to captivate outsiders.
Crafts
Embroidery, traditional costume jewelry, and other traditional crafts are just as much a part of the picture as Appenzell folk music with its typical instrumentation, including the hammered dulcimer – as the Appenzellers say: "Taaleschwinge ond Hackbrett lose" (swinging coins and listening to the hammered dulcimer).
Culinary
The range extends from Appenzeller Biber and "Landsgmeendschrempfli" to "Südwöscht ond Chääsmageroone" – often accompanied by Appenzeller beer or "Flauder."
Excursions
The Ebenalp, Hohe Kasten, Kronberg, and Säntis mountains are great destinations for excursions with wonderful views. The mountain restaurants spoil you with regional specialties.
