Sustainability at Hof Weissbad

November 29, 2022

Nestled in the rolling hills of Appenzell, close to the Alpstein mountains and surrounded by nature, our Hof Weissbad resort covers over 30,000 m2 of land, forest, meadows, and streams. We are conscious and mindful of the environment. Joy, enjoyment, and relaxation are our top priorities. Sustainability is part of this and is more important to us than ever. We are constantly optimizing our ecological footprint with all our renovations and new buildings.

We care

... close to nature

... to our natural resources

... to tradition and customs

... to each other

We live in an age of sustainability, and our resort embodies this prudent, resource-conscious, and environmentally friendly spirit. We have always taken care to balance the needs of our guests, the local population, and the environment.

We want to strengthen this attitude in the future and pass it on to our guests.

A stay at Hof Weissbad stands for maximum relaxation and means ...

– Enjoy the unspoiled nature of Appenzell up close ...

– Experience authentic tradition and customs ...

– Consuming regionally ...

– Stay longer and immerse yourself deeper ...

... now and in the future.

– Outdoor pools are heated 100% with renewable energy

– Photovoltaic systems on the health center and seminar park

– 8 geothermal probes provide energy for hot water

– 2 in-house fresh water sources in Glandenstein

– 25 apprenticeships for the talents of tomorrow

At Hof Weissbad, we take responsibility – for our guests, for our employees, and for our environment. For years, we have been committed to regional products, short supply chains, consistent recycling, and ecological energy sources.

geothermal probes

When we opened in 1994, we installed two geothermal probes at a depth of 1,200 meters (unique in Switzerland) and today we are able to cover around 30 percent of our total hot water requirements with this geothermal energy. This also justified the existing outdoor pool, which is heated to 33 degrees Celsius. At night, it is covered with a foil, of course.

Own water sources

We are in the fortunate position of having our own water supply – a very important asset for tourism in the Appenzell region. In Glandenstein, directly behind the hotel, we have two cold water springs that we use for the entire resort.

New bathing and sauna house (from September 2023)

The bathhouse will feature a modern fitness room, a small bistro, various relaxation areas, a walk-in roof terrace, a natural swimming pond, and three saunas. A new outdoor pool will also be added. The water is pumped into the basement at night so that the heat can be stored. In the morning, the water is pumped back into the pool. This water must be heated using 100% renewable energy – otherwise, we would not be granted a permit under the law. We are meeting this requirement with six additional geothermal probes, a solar roof on the health center, and a solar roof on the seminar park.
