The garden is a place where guests and staff, guests and locals can meet. The focus is on the joy of medicinal plants and the associated joy of health. We also grow ten relaxing and ten energizing tea plants here.
Our herb garden is also a place of power – a place that offers peace, new energy, and promotes mindfulness. The special atmosphere is created by the variety of scents, colors, and shapes, the harmonious design of the beds, and the connection to the surrounding Appenzell nature. The view of the majestic Alpstein backdrop reinforces this feeling of grounding and vastness.
The garden was created based on the philosophy of Alfred Vogel and planned and designed by the Alfred Vogel Foundation. Around a large, open space, 71 wooden-framed beds in a variety of shapes are planted with around 80 types of herbs – from lavender and echinacea to golden balm and rose balm. Tobacco and hemp plants also have their place as natural protection against pests. Two raised vegetable beds, a wild bee hotel, and fragrant rose and flower beds complete the natural setting.
The arrangement of the plants is important to us. Some like each other very much, while others do not. The raised bed is particularly fascinating: filled to the brim with nutrients, it allows the young vegetables to shoot up out of the ground.
The garden provides fresh herbs for seasoning and decorating dishes, flowers and leaves for teas, ointments and wraps, as well as nutritious vegetables and crisp salads.
The garden is freely accessible and can be explored at any time. Guided tours are available by appointment and offer in-depth insights into the world of medicinal plants. On request, we also organize special events – for example, a summer aperitif with a garden tour or the production of a herbal product under expert guidance.
